A New Life of the Mind

dragonfly-book-summer_hGuerrilla Scholars is more than just another nonprofit organization. It represents an effort to build learning communities based on the “community of scholars” model that formed the basis of early medieval universities. These small (seldom more than a hundred or so) institutions consisted of a mixture of students and instructors drawn together by a common love of learning and teaching. Working with almost no administration, but with the active support of the Church, the university was the gift of the medieval world to modern society.

Since then, academe has gone in various directions–sometimes several at once–trying to adjust to the changing times, other times driving those changes. The natural friction that arises between an intellectual community and ordinary people has prompted the growth of administrations to ease that friction, but too often ends up becoming a tool to keep troublesome thinkers in line.

We seek to foster the creation of small communities of learners, thinkers, artists, writers, scientists, theologians, and anyone else, professional or amateur, with curiosity to burn. We also promote ways of thinking, learning, and teaching that we believe can ameliorate some of the excesses found both in academia and in a larger world increasingly dominated by noise.

Welcome to our community.
